Poem Text Below (Formatted version attached as PDF):
Love, Daisy
He spoke to me,a girl of seventeen,so casually,as if he knew that we were meant to be.
But,between you and me,nothing was what it seemed.
We wilted like roses in glass, without oxygen, twin blazes gone dead. And between you and me,
I brokelike a vase yearning for golden joints, cracking, lacking a heart to change.
He was cheap glue. And I?I was a pretty
little
fool.
Our Review
Love, Daisy by Alexandra Varkarotas, seamlessly blends spoken word poetry, visual imagery, and sound to deliver a powerful presentation. The meaning is effectively conveyed through the integration of words and visuals. The director's statement eloquently reflects her intent, and she has undoubtedly done justice to her vision.
Director Biography - Alexandra Varkarotas
Poet and junior talent agent, Alexandra Varkarotas, is interested in combining her love of film with her passion for poetry. Originally from Las Vegas, she grew up experiencing immersive forms of entertainment, inspiring her love of storytelling in various mediums from an early age.
While a freshman at The University of Texas at Austin, Varkarotas was accepted into the Screenwriting Incubator at Texas Student Television. Collaborating with three other students, she created and produced Hollywood U., a sitcom about celebrities in college. Noticing that there was no travel show at the station, Varkarotas created UTravels, a show dedicated to exploring all the unique places and events in Austin.
In addition to producing student TV shows, Varkarotas continues to build a name for herself in the Texas entertainment industry. Serving as a Film Publicity Intern at SXSW, she learned the ropes of publicity. Working as a Marketing Intern at WriterDuet allowed her to develop her love of writing while learning hands-on how to build marketing strategies. She now helps actors build their dream careers as a junior agent for an LA-based boutique talent agency.
In her free time, she loves writing poetry. Notable publications include Apricity Magazine and Spark Magazine.
Director Statement
"I hope she’ll be a fool—that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool." ~Daisy, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
The above line from the classic novel, The Great Gatsby, was the starting point for this poem. Coupling this sentient with relationship woes, the poem came into shape, growing beyond its starting point. It returned home when it came to filming, as the lead actress and I talked about what a modern-day Daisy would resemble and how our environment today affects us as young women. We hope you enjoy our short poetry film.
