Marko

Synopsis:

Marko and Ankica never gotten over the death of their only child Ante in the war. When their neighbour Stipe suggests renting son’s room to tourists, Marko sees that as an insult but Ankica manages to talk him into it. Renting rooms is easy money, especially for retired people, but having an unknown man sleeping in son's bed troubles Marko a lot.

Our Review:

Is it possible to give a hug to Marco & Ankica?

A poignant reminder of the war and the trauma it has left behind not only for those who gallantly fought in it, but of those who have lost their loved ones and never been able to move on after many many years.

Ankica is forced to take an inmate to make the ends meet. But Marco is not willing to do it at the cost of losing his sons room to a total stranger. Years have passed but nothing has changed in that room. Everything is the preserved in his son’s memory. Marco is all about overcoming the past and to live in the moment. The bonding that blossoms between the two fathers is indescribable. The performance of each Actor is commendable and hats off to the director for bringing the script alive. Its only the tears that flows tells how heartwarming it was to watch ‘ Marco”.

Director Statement Thirty years after the beginning of the war in Croatia, the animosity between Croats and Serbs is still present. In Croatia, the youngest member of the European Union, known for the Adriatic Sea, people still mostly live off tourism. This way of life forces them to put aside all the sacrifices they had to make during the war, as well as the principles that guided them. Short feature film “Marko” shows how some things in Croatia did change and how life circumstances have forced people to go down a new, unexpected path.
